Approach to Therapy:
Dr. Atkins tailors his approach to meet the unique needs of each age group and family dynamic. He draws from a variety of psychotherapeutic frameworks—including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Structural Family Therapy—alongside thoughtful use of medication management when appropriate. His approach is integrative, combining evidence-based therapies with individualized care plans that honor each patient’s unique experiences and goals. His background as an emergency room nurse and Army combat medic has shaped a calm, focused, and trauma-informed mindset that helps him support patients through both acute crises and ongoing challenges. Patients can expect a safe, collaborative environment where their voices are heard and respected. His style is grounded in empathy, resilience, and flexibility, with an emphasis on building trust, fostering open communication, and empowering individuals and families with the tools needed for lasting wellness.
What motivates you to do this work?

Dr. Atkins was inspired to pursue psychiatry after witnessing the mental health challenges faced by service members during his military career and, later, the broader mental health crisis while working as an emergency room nurse. These experiences highlighted the urgent need for compassionate and committed psychiatric providers, shaping his dedication to the field. He is motivated by the opportunity to advocate for his patients, walk alongside them in their healing journey, and help change the trajectory of their lives. Seeing patients grow, find stability, and build resilience is deeply rewarding, and it continues to inspire him to keep learning and striving to be the best provider he can be.

Beyond the Clinic
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Atkins enjoys staying active through working out, hiking, and other outdoor activities. He also finds joy in the kitchen—whether it’s cooking for friends and family, experimenting with new recipes, or trying out different styles of baking. During his downtime, he loves reading fantasy novels and playing video games, both of which give him a chance to relax and recharge. He also enjoys traveling to different countries, exploring new cultures and cuisines, and spending time with his three dogs, who keep him active and bring lots of joy to his daily life.
